»
Iran's supreme leader has issued a stern warning that protests against the country's disputed presidential election results must end. In his first public remarks after days of protests, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said the outcome had to be decided at the ballot box, not on the street. He said political leaders would be blamed for any violence. US President Barack Obama said the Iranian government should be aware that "the world is watching". It's Egypt's young who are leading the protests
»
Patience is a virtue – maybe even the supreme one in Egypt's popular hierarchy of values, but patience also has its limits and, now, at last, it seems as if we've arrived at ours. And fittingly, it's the young of the country who are leading us. They've had enough of unemployment, deteriorating education, corruption, police brutality and political impotence. As is now well known, they organised Tuesday's protests over Facebook and in closed virtual and actual meetings. Talk about grassroots! "They...

Fiddling while Tegucigalpa burns
»
Of the many lessons to be learned from the Honduran political crisis, perhaps the most important one for would-be deal brokers is that if you get involved, prepare to stay involved. The Organisation of American States, Costa Rican, Brazilian, Chilean and, most recently, US negotiators at even the highest levels have thrown up their hands in dismay at the intransigence on display. The agreement at the end of last month, which was praised by the Obama administration as a landmark in inter-American ...

Suicide protest in Vietnam
»
The authorities in Vietnam have confirmed that a badly burned body has been found in a park in the central coastal city of Danang. The Paris-based Buddhist Information Bureau says it was that of a man who committed suicide on Sunday by burning himself as a protest against religious repression. Such suicides in Vietnam, although they do not happen often, are a reminder of the monks who self-immolated in the 1960s to protest against religious repression by what was then a US-backed government i...
