CANVAS LOGO

Canvas Logo consists of Otpor's fist* placed on three arrows arranged as a triangle, where each arrowhead enters the succeeding arrow - symbol of recycling. As the used or malfunctioned product is being recycled and a new product is being made of it later, this symbolizes change within the society - an existing system is being replaced by new one.

The fist is placed in the middle of the recycle arrows, and in the bottom area is a sign, cantered horizontally - "CANVAS" with all capital letters.

The Fist - Blade of Mind

"If we have no fist, we could be just another political party, and that means to be nothing"

The fist, one of the most exploited body parts for the purposes of symbolism, represents unity and strength that goes with action. Symbolic position of clenched fist represents threat and aggression ( Illustrated Encyclopedia Of Traditional Symbols by J. C. Cooper ), while raised fist is a typical gesture of triumph and victory ( The Desmond Morris Guide to Body Language ). For Kant, fist is a "visible part of brain", while for Bronowski, it is a "blade of mind".

In recent history of our civilization, clenched fist has become a mass symbol of various political parties and civil society movements, also used by leaders of civil revolutions, working class and communist movements around the globe.

In contemporary American history, clenched fist appears as a symbol of Black Panthers, afro-american political organization founded in 1966, in California. At the Olympics, held in Mexico, in 1968, three of the United States afro-american athletes, raised their heads, and clenched fists, standing at the winner's pedestal.

Fist as a symbol in Serbian history, can be seen in the picture taken in 1942, showing Stevan Filipovic with raised fist, calling for resistance in Valjevo. After the Second World War, in 1961, the picture served as a model for the monument dedicated to soldiers killed in this revolution (sculptor: Vojin Bakic).

In 1998, the fist became symbol of the Serbian Resistance Movement. For presenting this symbol in newspapers, the first publisher fined according to the acting Law on Information was the Daily Telegraph, owned by Slavko Curuvija. This act of braveness and spite has brought anger of Milosevic upon him, and led to his mysterious assassination.

Logo of the Serbian Resistance Movement symbolically represents people resistance to regime of Milosevic, and it was deliberately chosen as symbol that equally suits politically left and right oriented citizens. It was designed by Nenad Petrovic - Duda, who was at the time student of the School for Graphic Design. His work has been printed in millions of copies and it was like a dream that became true. The first international appearing of the symbol has occurred on one of the occasions of MTV awards presentation.

"This is not a system, this is a disease.

Bite the system!

Pull your self together - live the Resistance!"
