TEHRAN, Oct. 26 (UPI) -- Bodyguards for Iranian opposition figure Mehdi Karroubi fired warning shots into the air following a confrontation with supporters of the conservative regime.
Karroubi came under attack by supporters of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad at a press fair during the weekend in Tehran, reports Radio Zamaneh, an independent Persian broadcaster in the Netherlands.
Demonstrators reportedly attacked Karroubi, who challenged Ahmadinejad in June, with clubs and managed to remove his turban during the scuffle.
Opposition Internet outlets in Iran called on supporters to attend the media event and chant slogans against a decision to close a series of newspapers.
Iran's state-funded broadcaster Press TV reports opposition demonstrators chanted "death to the dictator" while Ahmadinejad supporters responded with "death to the monafeq" (hypocrite).
The Press TV report says Karroubi's bodyguards fired warning shots to clear the way for his safe passage from the demonstrations.
Iran witnessed some of the most violent demonstrations since the Islamic Revolution in 1979 following the disputed victory for Ahmadinejad in June elections.
Radio Zamaneh reports supporters of the so-called green movement in Iran have attended public gatherings sporting green symbols in solidarity with the opposition.
