Thousands of riot police and Revolutionary Guards in Iran have surrounded Tehran University to prevent student demonstrations. Pro-government militia members armed with tear gas and firearms have been turned out to control the anticipated protest which is likely to attract a large amount of demonstrators on university campuses across the country. Police have been conducting ID checks on anyone entering the campus to prevent opposition activists from joining the students. Over the past week, the government sent threatening emails to many students, warning them not to participate in Monday's demonstrations. Some student-activist opponents of the government were out in Iran over the weekend, some shouting "Death to the Dictator" from Tehran's rooftops.
Authorities have stopped Internet access and have warned journalists working for the foreign press to stay in their rooms or offices over the next three days. Opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi has now thrown his support behind the student demonstrations, declaring that his movement is still alive and gaining legitimacy. The Iranian Supreme Leader has blamed Western attitudes for student protests in the country. The Ayatollah has stated that propaganda from the US and Britain has led to the existence of conflict inside Iran. Describing the countries as "arrogant" and "enemies of Iran," he singled out Americans as being at the top of Iran's list of enemies but the British as "the most dreadful of those enemies." He said the so-called enemies were stirring up trouble inside Iran with the student opposition activists.
