Prestigious award for human rights and democracy, the Danish Fund Poul Lauritzen "this year was awarded to two Serbs, Srdja Popovic and Slobodan Đinović for" contribution to democracy and its promotion throughout the world ", two former" RESISTANCE-ASA, with its organization: the Center for Applied Nonviolent Action.
Since 1984, the PL award goes to "various individuals who through their pro-democracy, humman rights or nonviolent struggle works contributed to the goals of the Universal Charter of Human Rights of the United Nations". In previous years Poul Lauritzen (who died in 1993) and his associates were searching for activists from throughuot the world including prominent leaders like Turkish Ali Taigun and Tibetan Dalai Lama.
Award was presented to executive director of the Center, Srdja Popovic on a ceremony in Danish National Museum Of Art by the president of the Foundation, and Judge of the Supreme Court of Denmark mr Poul Soegard. Ceremony was attended by Serbian Ambassador to Denmark mrs Vida Ognjenovic.
"In the last ten years, Serbian Nonviolent October Revolution of 2000. has become the best Serbian brand in the world, from sucesfull cases like Georgia and Ukraine, through Lebanon and Maldives to ongoing struggles like Burma, Iran, Vietnam or Venezuela" said Popovic on this ocassion.
Popovic, being named a "global nightmare for autocrats" by Danish daily newspapers "Politiken" added : "Thousands of brave activists thruoghout the world fighting for freedom and human rights are inspired by our example and it is our duty to do whatever we can to help them. We will continue our mission because we strongly believe that people do have right to be free regardless of their race, ethnicity or religion. Once you learn that 16 000 Iranians have risked their life and freedom by ilegaly downloading and printiong your book, as it happened in 2009. your life changes forever and gets a new sense."
